Dry Needling is a treatment technique that is being used more and more by practitioners across the country. Requiring specialized advanced training, the procedure involves the use of a filament needle into the painful area of the muscle that typically contains a trigger point. There is no injected solution (hence the name “dry needling”). Most patients will not feel the needle penetrating the skin, but can feel some discomfort once it advances into the muscle, particularly if there are active trigger points. The sensation is often felt like a cramp or a spasm for a brief moment.
Dry needling is used in treatment for acute and chronic pain and tension, restoration of healthy tissues after an injury, and even pain and injury prevention, with very few side effects. This technique is highly effective in finding and eliminating neuromuscular dysfunction that leads to pain and functional deficits. Typically, marked change is found within 1-4 treatment sessions, though this can vary depending on the cause and duration of the symptoms.
